Identity theft occurs when someone uses your name, address, social security number, bank or credit card account numbers, passwords, or other personal information without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. While online banking and e-commerce are very safe with built-in security features for your protection, to avoid identity theft you should always be careful about responding to unsolicited requests for your personal financial information via the Internet, email, phone or mail.
Help Prevent Identity Theft — Some simple tips to help protect yourself
- Monitor your accounts regularly and report suspicious activity
- Keep us informed of travel and current contact information
- Review your credit report annually
- Protect your numbers like your social security number, driver’s license, credit cards, passwords, and PIN numbers
- Secure your mail — Take outgoing mail to the post office collection boxes or post office and promptly remove mail from your mailbox.
- Shred it — any items with personal information that you wish to discard
